What is an AI readiness assessment?
An AI readiness assessment is a quick, structured check of whether your firm can use AI safely and get real value from it. It looks at five areas: your AI policy (or the lack of one), how your data and client information are stored and secured, the tools your team already uses, including unapproved ones, the workflows where AI could help, and how ready your people are for change. You come away with a snapshot of your risks and quick wins, not a sales pitch.
It’s different from a full law firm AI audit, which goes deeper into which tools are used on which files. Most firms start with the free assessment and only go further if the snapshot shows they need to.
You’ll walk away with 7 things
No obligation. No hard sell. If you want help implementing, we’ll scope it to your firm after a conversation.
Run by Celene Hoag and the Chops Consulting team. We’ve worked with over 70 law firms across Canada and the US, and we’re certified Clio, LEAP and Actionstep Legal Financial Management consultants.
Your people and your operations count too
AI only works if your team is ready for it. Alongside policy, data and tools, the assessment looks at:
- How your team feels: enthusiasm, worry, resistance and fatigue
- Structure and ownership: who owns AI, who decides, and whether your partners are aligned
- Tech comfort and training: where your people are confident and where they’d want help
- Change capacity: how much bandwidth your team has after recent changes
- Operational readiness: whether your workflows, roles and handoffs are written down well enough to pilot something new
Your written summary says what to do about each.

Frequently asked questions about the AI readiness assessment
Is it really free?
Yes. There’s no cost and no obligation.
Will you need access to our systems or client files?
No. The free assessment uses the questionnaire and a conversation only. Deeper reviews happen in the paid audit, under confidentiality terms.
We’re not using AI at all. Is it still worth it?
Yes. Starting with a policy and the right tools is much easier than cleaning up later.
Do you sell AI software?
No. We’re vendor-neutral consultants. We’re a certified Clio consultant, a LEAP certified consultant and a certified Actionstep Legal Financial Management consultant, and we’re an Actionstep partner. That experience helps us set up the tools you choose, but we compare every option, including tools you already own, on the same criteria.
Which jurisdictions do you cover?
We work with law firms in every province and territory across Canada and throughout the United States. We map your firm to the guidance from your law society or state Bar Association.
Is this legal or ethics advice?
No. It’s operational and technology guidance. For ethics opinions, contact your regulator’s practice advisors.
